I've Followed Her Home and Here's What I think

This is the debut novel by Steph Cha featuring amateur sleuth Juniper Song. Song is unable to turn down a request from her best friend Luke to investigate whether or not his father has been having an affair on a young, very attractive woman from his firm. Having been a fan of crime mysteries and Philip Marlowe, she's more than happy to put all that she's learned into action. She just wasn't anticipating the action she'd get or how it makes her handle issues with her own past. Steph Cha did a great job of making me care about where the story was going by having such a relatable main character. I can see Song having a series where we can watch her grow as a detective or in her personal life. She has some issues that after having read this book, I would love to see worked out. My favorite part of the novel are hearing the witty or sarcastic things the narrator (Song) is saying or thinking. The characters in the story were all physically described well. I understand that with this novel being told in the first person, we can only know what Song knows, I just wish the peripheral characters and their personalities were described as well as their physical descriptions were. It would have helped me to care more for them. I appreciated Song being Korean. I loved learning about the culture and urge Cha to give us more of her in the next book. Overall, I was impressed with this debut novel. It held my attention and never got boring. It's a light-hearted read that I would recommend for all you amateur sleuths out there.

Following Her Home... So Far...

I'm about 40% of the way through this novel. I'm reading it on my Kindle and it is flying by. So far I like how witty it is and the protagonist Juniper Song is a pretty likeable character. I can't wait to find out how everything meshes together in the end.

I have been given the wonderful oppurtunity to read and review this debut book, provided by Netgalley. I love reading debut books because an author's first book is often like their baby and it's when a reader's insight is most regarded. I also in ways feel once they are successful, I can look back and say wow! I remember reading their first novel and knowing they are going places. I hope that is true for Steph Cha. Synopsis: Juniper Song knows secrets–how to keep them and how to search them out. As a girl, noir fiction was her favorite escape, and Philip Marlowe has always been her literary idol. So when her friend Luke asks her to investigate a possible affair between his father and a young employee, Juniper (or "Song" as her friends call her) finds an opportunity to play detective. Driving through L.A.'s side streets, following leads, tailing suspects-it all appeals to Song's romantic ideal of the noir hero. But when she's knocked out while investigating a mysterious car and finds a body in her own trunk, Song lurches back to the real L.A., becoming embroiled in a crime that goes far beyond role play. What's more, this isn't the first time Song has stuck her nose in other people's business. As she fights to discover the truth about her friend's family, Song reveals one of her own deeply hidden secrets, something dark and damaging, urging her to see the current mystery through, to rectify the mistakes of her past life.
