Review:The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter

The Good Daughter

I won Karin Slaughter's The Good Daughter some time ago through a Goodreads Giveaway. I hadn't won a Goodreads Giveaway in a while so I was pleasantly surprised to see a package with my name on it that was way too big to contain the iPhone X cases I'd ordered from Wish.com. Anyone who's ordered anything from Wish knows that in the length of time it takes for the product to arrive you no longer remember ordering anything at all, and it's virtually impossible to remember the item was in the first place. But hey, the prices are unbeatable. $2 for an iPhone X case. I don't think it gets better than that.

But I digress...
Once I realized the treasure that the package contained I did a happy, gleeful dance because one, I'd won a Goodreads giveaway, and two, the book was something I wanted to win. I learned long ago not to enter in any Goodread's giveaways unless I actually really want to read the book. Early on in my relationship with this site, I'd won a few books that weren't worth the few seconds it took to enter. And I'd won some that I just never got around to finding the time to read (which I feel is unfair since it was free after all... the least I could do is read it).

I digress again. Why do I keep digressing? Maybe it's because I'm far from being a good daughter

Charlotte (Charlie) and Samantha (Sam) Quinn both maintain separate lives since twenty-eight years earlier their lives were forever changed by a home invasion that left them scarred, bruised, handicapped, and motherless. Their father, Rusty Quinn was not well liked in their small town because he fought for those who seemed utterly defenseless. In life's own ironic fashion, the men who invaded his home were also clients. The story is that they wanted to kill Rusty in order to clear their legal fees but instead, they happened upon his wife and two children. The rest you'll just need to read to find out what happened. It's not pretty. You've been warned.

After many years of avoiding each other, a school shooting has brought them back together. Charlie, still living in their small town, practicing law, is caught in a whirlwind situation when fate would have her witness this heinous crime. From there she's forced to face her past because Rusty, the attorney representing the shooter, is brutally attacked, and her sister is called because they don't believe he has much time.

Sam, the older of the two sisters, begrudgingly returns home. For Sam, this home is where life was drastically changed. Although she tries to ignore the past, she lives with the scars daily. She wanted to come back home like she wanted (another) hole in the head.

Before long, these two can't hide from their tumultuous past nor can they deny that they'll need each other to make it through.

So... my review?

Where do I start?

What do I say?

Karin Slaughter is one of the best suspense thriller authors and I don't have one bad word to say about this title.

Don't believe me? Just watch.

The Good Daughter is a compelling, suspenseful title that convinces me that life always has a way of making us face whatever demons we think we have laid to bed. Both sisters seemingly have their lives together but they both struggle with the painful past that irreparably damaged their family. Slaughter does an awesome job at merging the emotional burden of the past with the thrilling suspense of the present.

At this point, Karin Slaughter has churned out one must-read after another. She's been one of my favorite authors for a long time now. She hasn't failed me yet. Ultimately, I can go on and on about how amazing this title was or how much I love Slaughter and her work but you can just read it and report back. ****

You're welcome!

Copy provided through a Goodreads Giveaway

Forgot to mention, this book is the first of The Good Daughterseries. And yes... you're still welcome!
